Kipsiro back home
Team Uganda touched down Entebbe International Airport tarmac about 3pm Sunday with obviously two reactions.
One; this is the one we saw. Over a thousand fans that turned up comprising mostly athletes and the Kapchorwa community impatiently waited for one man. Moses Kipsiro. The double gold medalist at the just concluded Commonwealth games in New Delhi India.
Two: his teammates in New Delhi passed through the back door twice. At the Airport on arrival and at their mini welcome reception at Golf Course hotel Entebbe from where they arrived in two separate buses.
Back to Kipsiro. He emerged from the VIP lounge a few minutes after landing in a red team Uganda official jersey wearing a mild, calm and steady smile.
He constantly waved, before entering a waiting open roof Toyota Prado from where he took some time of waving and smiling at the fans who had camped whole day at Entebbe.
In a convoy of about 15 cars, with Kipsiro right at the top of all, he waved throughout his drive to Golf Course Hotel Entebbe where he was greeted in all forms. Hugs, smiles, handshakes, disbelief, dances, name it.
There was a photo session too. And Kipsiro was so easy with too this demands. Point and shoot cameras clicked away, phones were raised and of course press photographers including yours truly thought they would get everything they could have photographed in New Delhi.
After about 30 minutes of the Kipsiro shine, his other team-mates arrive. Nothing was really exciting about them. And they too didn’t look impressed with themselves. Some skipped the presidential dinner organised for them at state house, jumped into cabs/taxi’s and hit the road to Kampala city.
Good for some of them who held flashy phones most likely bought with their allowances during the tournament. If those are their medals, then the Commonwealth games in New Delhi was a success.
