Stella Atals’ Awesome Designs and Charm Tower Fire
Stella Atal on shot notice showcased at the monthly Silk Fashion Nite on March 10, 2011 and left a mark. Atal’s afro-centric work was evident as she mixed African and Western materials to create simple and original designs.
Atal displayed her designs in three stages. First, was the “recycled” where she turns around old and abandoned clothes into top designer wears.
Then the beach and swim suits. Her beach wear was Ugandan she claims. “Most of the times you go to Ugandan beaches, girls are afraid to show their bodies, so i designed a little cover which takes away some fear,” Atal said at the end of the show.
Stella Atal was born in northern Uganda on the shores of lake Kyoga. She was raised and educated in Kampala. She comes from an artistic family and was introduced to painting at age five .
Her work has been showcased throughout Africa, as well as in London, Holland, Spain and the United States. She is the recipient of numerous fashion awards.
“I want my fashion to be connected to the community. To be part of the community. I’ve gone some miles, I want to pull people behind.” Stella Atal

Charm Tower Catches Fire
Charm Towers, one of Kampala’s tallest buildings went into panic as fire gutted the Southern section of the building
The section affected hosted mainly stationary shops.
When i first reached the scene, i found Firemen bravely pushing water pipes into the burning building. The fire was deep inside. All we could see from the outside was smoke
Firemen entered the fire area in turns. When the breathing gas got finished, that lot came out. This particular fireman came out running. He was choking because of smoke
Shop owners kept roaming around the premises as efforts to put of the fire went on.
“I am Sorry”. An abandoned card is seen outside the premises as a man, (i believe to be one of the shop owners) makes a call.
Shop owners who rescued some items were seen packing them for transfer to secure locations. Most of them lost millions worth of books, scanners, photocopying machines among others.
It was a matter of saving priorities. After moving out the valuable items, this cup was left to feel the heat on an empty shelf
On rooftops and balconies of neighbouring buildings, people watched the Fire Brigade battle the fire.
I was contemplating leaving the seen to file the pictures when i bumped into this preacher. He was just across the road in front of the main fire outlet. He was preaching about how God does things for a reason and that “people should not lose hope”. Onlookers felt irritated that they gave him a few coins and asked that he leaves the premises.Well, he didn’t. He moved ten steps away and starting preaching again.
And so the fire was controlled. To sum it up, this fireman took advantage of the remaining water to wash his cap.
Job well done.A fireman takes water with a soft face after successfully putting off the fire.
The cause?Police is yet to investigate.
